Daniel Gimeno-Traver takes down Steve Darcis the opening round – Suisse Open Gstaad 2011
Unseeded in the tournament, Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain defeated the Belgian competitor, Steve Darcis in the opening round of Credit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad, being played at the Credit Agricole Arena in Gstaad, Switzerland,
on Tuesday afternoon.
The enthralling contest took two hours and twenty eight minutes to conclude, with the Spaniard winning at 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, to make it into the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event. Darcis
hung in the contest till the last minute but it was the sheer brilliance of Gimeno-Traver which ousted him in the third set to end his voyage in the tournament.
Intense tennis was witnessed in the opening set with both men trying to get the better of each other. Gimeno-Traver delivered 65 per cent of his serve on target and secured 14 out of 22 first serve points on it to get the competitive
advantage over his opponent in the first set. He stung the first serve break of the day in the sixth game to lead 4-2 but Darcis retaliated a couple of games later to reduce the deficit at 4-5. A second break point conversion from the Spaniard sealed the opener
for him at 6-4 to get one up in the contest.
Scores kept on moving on even terms in the second set, until Darcis registered a serve break to get in to a 6-5 lead and then served out to close the set at 7-5. Tide turned in the final set once again, with Gimeno-Traver striking
in the second game to take off with a 3-0 lead. A break point conversion from Darcis in the fifth game brought the scores on even terms again at 4-4 but another serve break from the Spaniard proved decisive in the match, sealing victory for him at 7-5.
Gimeno-Traver’s victory over Darcis earns him a berth in the second round of Suisse open Gstaad, where he will face either the fifth seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain or the local wildcard entrant Michael Lammer for a place in the
quarter-finals.
