Daniel Gimeno-Traver trounces Alessandro Giannessi to reach the last eight – SkiStar Swedish Open 2012
Spain’s 106th ranked contestant, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, reached the quarter-finals at a tour level event for the first time in this season, as he ousted the world number 146, Alessandro Giannessi of Italy, in straight
sets 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad, Sweden on Thursday.
The match saw a steady start from both players, as they won their serve in the first nine games to take the score to 5-4 in favour of Gimeno-Traver. Serving to stay in the set at 4-5, Giannessi could not hold and dropped it 4-6.
The Spaniard hit a couple of aces and 71 percent of the first deliveries in the opening set. The 26-year-old had a reasonably good conversion rate as well, claiming 17 of the 22 first and six of the nine second serves points. In
comparison, Giannessi was unable to smack any ace but committed one double fault. He had a first serve percentage of 72 but managed to win just 14 of the 21 points on them. The Italian failed to save one of the five break points he faced and could not covert
any of the two he received.
After taking one set to love lead, Gimeno-Traver came roaring in the second one, securing opening three games to build a 3-0 lead. Though, Giannessi managed to break back in the fifth and held his following serve to draw level
at 3-3. Gimeno-Traver started to dominate once again after that, making a breakthrough in the eighth and utilising it to win 6-3.
The Spaniard banged in five aces this time but also made one double fault. The 6ft 1in tall won most of the points on his first serves and second returns, clinching 15 of the 20 and four of the seven points on them respectively.
The Valencia, Spain resident availed two of the three break chances he created in the second set.
It took Gimeno-Traver just an hour and 24 minutes to throw his Italian opponent out of the competition.
The Spaniard is slated to take on the second seed, Nicolas Almagro, in the quarter-finals.
