Daniel Hudson shines as Arizona Diamondbacks defeat Florida Marlins 5-1 – MLB Update
Daniel Hudson pitched six-plus strong innings, allowing only one run, as Arizona Diamondbacks beat the struggling Florida Marlins 5-1 on Sunday, 12 June at Sun Life Stadium, Miami.
Hudson’s ability to improve the quality of his game could be seen since the start on Sunday. He not only came down hard on the Marlins’ hitters, whose hitting coach was recently fired, but also helped Arizona’s offence to set things right.
The Florida starter, Brad Hand, suffered a big blow in the very first inning when Stephen Drew doubled to deep right in a hit that gave him and his team two runs. The early 2-0 lead was then in Hudson’s domain to handle.
Hudson threw strong and scoreless innings, allowing the Arizona team to build up more pressure on the Marlins. Ryan Roberts infused further energy to Arizona’s offence with his single to left, tripling the lead for the team.
Xavier Nady took it to 4-0 by his sacrifice fly to the centre in the two-run third inning of Brad Hand which also saw three big hits. All the while, the Marlins’ offence failed to live up the expectations owing to near-perfect pitching of Hudson.
"The timely hitting is not there," manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "We're failing with runners in scoring position. But we're battling there. I'm sure if they keep pushing the way they're doing right now that we're going to get out of this.”
Burke Badenhop replaced Hand as the team trailed by 4-0. That, although stopped the flow of runs by Arizona, could not reverse the lead. Gaby Sanchez scored the only run for the Marlins in the seventh inning as Hudson threw his last inning. Daniel put in
a brilliant pitching performance for the team.
Starting the season with 0-4, Hudson has now won seven in eight games he has pitched as the starter. "I just couldn't seem to get that third out of the inning a bunch of times," Hudson said, "but I was able to throw some pitches when I needed to with guys
on base."
David Hernandez then relieved Hudson who pitched a shut-out eighth inning. Gerardo Parra doubled to left, scoring the fifth run for the well-settled Arizona offence. As much as the previous two pitchers succeeded, Aaron Heilman threw a scoreless ninth inning
to seal a 5-1 victory for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
