Daniel Hudson shines as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeat Washington Nationals 4-2 – MLB Update
Daniel Hudson almost threw a shut-out game on Wednesday, August 24 in the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2 win over the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.
Pitching into the ninth it was only Laynce Nix and Jonny Gomes who homered consecutively as the rest could not play him.
Despite a game that did not see a big score coming off the Diamondbacks’ offence, for them the defence has always been a source of strength to rely upon.
The Nationals, on the other hand, have a lot to ponder over. After winning the first of this four-game series by 4-1, they have lost their last two games. But Zimmerman still has hopes from both offence and the defence.
“That's what that team is known for,” said Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, whose streak of 29 consecutive games reaching base came to an end. "They don't score that many runs, they get big hits when they need them and then their pitching staff kind
of carries them. The last two games, that's what they've done to us."
Wednesday’s game began with Livan Hernandez pitching a scoreless inning apart from the two hits that he gave up. Daniel Hudson followed with a 1-hit and scoreless first that kept the game tied. It was not until the fourth inning that the Arizona Diamondbacks
came into action.
Chris Young was first to score a double to deep left giving the team 1-0 lead followed by Lyle Overbay whose single to right doubled the lead for the Arizona Diamondbacks by the end of the fourth inning.
Daniel Hudson, all the same was beyond the Washington Nationals’ offence which struggled to play him with a degree of confidence. While both the starters were pitching good innings, the Washington Nationals opted for Hernandez to pitch into the eighth.
There was a bit of disappointment for Hudson. Nonetheless, for him, winning the game was first priority which he successfully achieved. "Absolutely," he said. "Just two stupid pitches at the end. At least we won the game. And that's what's important right
now."
But as Miguel Montero came, he had a deep strike against Hernandez to score a two-run single that took the lead to 4-0 for the Arizona Diamondbacks. That called for Henry Rodriguez to come and pitch the latter half of the eighth to end the inning with 3-hits
and two runs.
Daniel Hudson who was comfortably pitching right into the ninth, having allowed no run yet, seemed to have his first shutout, but that did not materialise. Laynce Nix and Jonny Gomes homered simultaneously, but posed no serious threat to the Arizona Diamondbacks’
dominance in the game as they wrapped it up with a 4-2 win.
