Daniel Moreno Fernandez wins the seventh stage at the Criterium du Dauphine 2012
Daniel Moreno Fernandez of Team Katusha showed his class yet again at an important venue with his remarkable performance during the final stage of the Criterium du Dauphine 2012.
The cyclist rode brilliantly during the 126 kilometre race between Morzine to Chatel and bagged his fourth victory of the season.
His earlier wins include a first place finish at the GP Miguel Indurain, a stage 4 win at the Vuelta a Andalucia.
The Spaniard succeeded during the second stage of Criterium du Dauphine and once again managed to dominate the event on the Sunday’s race.
Moreno was delighted after securing the stage 2 and briefed it as one of his career’s best performances.
"I'm very happy with this victory. It's one the best of my career together with the stage in 'Vuelta a Espana' and 'Giro del Piemonte'”.
“Some said it was a surprising win for me, but I think I was one of the favourites instead”.
“I'm in a good shape after 'Giro d'Italia', during this season I've already taken two victories and the route was very suitable to my characteristics”.
“In fact, the last climbing before the finishing line was perfect for me: I started my rush with 300 meters to go, and I think it was really the right moment”.
However, Daniel’s win during the final stage of the race is nothing short of spectacular as he sailed passed the finish line in a quickest time of 2 hours, 59 minutes and 37 seconds.
Luis-Leon Sanchez of Team Rabobank, Cadel Evans of Team BMC, Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky and Rinaldo Nocentini of Team AG2R La Mondiale achieved the second, third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky, Wilco Kelderman of Team Rabobank, Tony Gallopin of Team Radioshack-Nissan, Egor Silin of Team Astana and Alexandre Geniez of Team Argos-Shimano were the top five young riders on the day.
Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky maintained his overall dominance after the final general classifications and secured the top overall spot.
His team-mate Michael Rogers finished 1 minute and 17 seconds behind at the second spot while Cadel Evans of Team BMC finished further 9 seconds behind at the third overall spot.
