Daniel Moreno wins the opening stage of the Vuelta a Burgos 2012
Daniel Moreno of Team Katusha continued his tremendous form and secured the opening stage of the Vuelta A Burgos.
He rode brilliantly during the 135 kilometre race and completed the event in an impressive time of 3 hours, 1 minute and 25 seconds.
Serio Luis Henao of Team Sky Pro Cycling finished almost at the same time and grabbed the second spot with Matti Breschel of Team Rabobank at the third position.
Allan Davis of Team Orica GreenEdge, Nacer Bouhanni of Team FDJ-BigMat and Fabio Taborre of Team Acqua & Sapone occupied the fourth, fifth and the sixth positions in the respective order.
Moreno was delighted after registering his fifth victory of the season and appreciated his team-mate Xavier Florencio’s effort during the race.
"It was a very fast stage but we were quite calm because we had [Xavier] Florencio in the breakaway, a rider who could win if the chase turned out to be unsuccessful," said Moreno.
"In the last kilometer when the group neutralized the breakaway we decided to take the lead: first [Angel] Vicioso”.
“Then [Joaquim] Rodriguez imposed their pace for me and I started my sprint with 300 meters to go”.
“I want to thank my teammates, I won quite easily thanks to their work, even if during the sprint a motorbike was in the middle of the route and I had to slow down".
The 30-year-old opened his winning account with a first place finish at the GP Miguel Indurain after his tremendous performance at the one-day Spanish race.
He also managed to secure the second and the seventh stages of the Criterium du Dauphine including a stage 4 win at the Vuelta a Burgos 2012.
Aitor Galdos of Team Caja Rural succeeded during the first, the second and the third sprints of the race while Maciej Paterski, Jonathan Monsalve and Daniel Moreno succeeded during the first, the second and the third climb of the event.
Moreno is now leading the stage 1 classifications with Sergio Luis Henao, Matti Breschel, Allan Davis and Nacer Bouhanni holding the next four positions.
Daniel Moreno also leads the points classifications with 25 UCI points to his credit while Sergio Luis Henao and Matti Breschel grabs the second and the third positions with 20 and 16 points respectively.
