Daniel Murphy sparks as New York Mets defeat Cincinnati Reds 4-2 - MLB Update
New York Mets’ first baseman, Daniel Murphy had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 2-for-5 with an average of .308 and hit two RBIs in the Mets’ 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati on July 25.
The first five innings of the game were score-less for both the teams as the batters played irregular shots towards the field areas. At the top of the first inning, Justin Turner drove a single-run shot towards centre-field but Jose Reyes flied out to centre-field,
Carlos Beltran struck-out swinging and David Wright grounded out to third base.
During the third inning, the Reds’ batters missed the scoring opportunities as Paul Janish reached towards third base on an infield single but Drew Stubbs was grounded out to short-stop position and Miguel Cairo flied out to centre-field.
In the fifth inning, R.A. Dickey was grounded out to second base, Reyes also grounded out to second base and Beltran fouled out to third base without adding any run to their team’s score-card. But in the sixth inning, the Reds got their initial run to take
a 1-0 lead. Brandon Phillips doubled towards deep right-centre and Cairo posted the first run of the game.
The Mets’ batters stepped on the gas during the seventh inning and blasted four runs to get a lead while the Reds were able to add up just one run and reduced their lead 4-2. Beltran hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field and Reyes scored a tie run. The leading
runs were taken by Turner and Wright, when Murphy doubled to deep right-field.
The fourth run for the Mets was taken by Murphy when Jason Bay drove a double-run shot towards deep right-field. On the other side, Janish contributed the last run for the Reds when Stubbs singled off centre-field. In the last two innings, the pitchers were
leading due to their outstanding throwing and did not allow any run.
Dickey gave up two runs on eight hits including two earned runs and threw his six innings with an ERA of 3.74. He struck-out seven batters and allowed only one walk on his 86 pitches. After a hard-fought victory, the Mets led off the four-game series 1-0
against the Reds at Cincinnati.
