Daniel Orzechowski claims Men’s 50m back-stroke gold: Day one – 2011 Brazilian Open LC Championships
Daniel Orzechowski of ECP/SABESP claimed gold medal of Men’s 50m back-stroke on first day of the 2011 Brazilian Open Long Course Championships in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, December 15.
The 26-year-old Orzechowski remained prominently ahead of his competitors and clinched gold medal of the event by posting a time of 24.78 seconds.
His stupendous effort remained just 0.29 seconds slower than the Brazilian mark of 24.49 seconds, owned by Guilherme Augusto Guido in 2009. The gold medallist was also 0.74 seconds away from improving the world record of 24.04 seconds, made by Liam Tancock of Great Britain during 2009.
The champion maintained a lead of 0.61 seconds over his team-member, Fabio Arikawa Santi, who emerged on the finishing end for silver medal by submitting an effort of 25.39 seconds. The third spot of the race was secured by Augusto Guido, who remained 0.24 seconds slower than his foregoing competitor and reported a time of 25.63 seconds for bronze medal.
Moments later, the arena witnessed a gruelling effort of Leonardo Guedes of NN SESI CPR, who remained 0.41 seconds behind the bronze medallist and concluded his race with an effort of 26.04 seconds.
He was trailed by Leonardo Sumida of CURITIBANO, who was 0.18 seconds slower than Guedes and appeared on the finishing wall for fifth fastest spot by clocking a time of 26.22 seconds.
The 25-year-old Sumida remained only 0.35 seconds ahead of ADESEF’s Yuri Andrew Costa, who completed his swim with a timing of 26.57 seconds for sixth position. Andrew Costa experienced strong competition from his following swimmer, Rafael Marques Palloni of UNISANTA, who was just 0.05 seconds slower than him and hit the wall with a timing of 26.62 seconds for seventh position.
He was chased by Thiago Magevski Sickert of CRF/RJ, who was 0.06 seconds behind his preceding swimmer and ended his swim in a time of 26.68 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, the crowd acknowledged scintillating effort of Orzechowski in the back-stroke discipline whereas the podium finishers were invited on the medal rostrum for their gruelling efforts after the completion of first day’s session.
