Daniel Paille pots two as Boston Bruins dominate Ottawa Senators 5-2 -NHL Update
Boston was without its captain, Zdeno Chara, for the second straight night after Chara injured his left knee during Saturday's contest against Columbus Blue Jackets, but that did not stop the Bruins from dominating and wiping out the Ottawa Senators, 5-2, on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at the Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Daniel Paille scored two straight for Boston to ensure their third straight victory in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season. Ottawa had managed to get their first victory against the Buffalo Sabres in overtime on Tuesday after three back-to-back losses, but again were taken down by Bruins.
Up until now, Boston has been playing exceptionally well which gives them an amazing 17-2-1 record since November 1, 2011.
"To be honest, I didn't know that," said Kelly, who gave Boston the one point lead in the final minutes of the second period. "I think that's maybe a good thing, that we're just playing every game. There are still points of our game that we can get better at and that's not necessarily a bad thing."
Rich Peverley scored in his second straight contest for six this season, 12:10 into the opening period, after a fight between Ottawa’s Matt Carkner and Boston’s, Milan Lucic.
Ottawa Senators' captain, Daniel Alfredsson, countered back early in the second period when Jason Spezza found him open near the net for a shot in the opening five minutes to level the match.
Kelly’s snap shot, nearly 10 minutes after the goal conceded, gave Boston the edge they needed to start scoring which led to a breakaway unassisted goal by Patrice Bergeron, followed by Paille, nearly a minute later, giving Bruins a dominating 4-1 lead, 5:50 into the third period.
Jason Spezza came out with one of his own at the 15:55 mark to attempt a late comeback for the Senators but was denied when Paille answered with his second of the night, with less than two minutes to go.
"They're a team that we know clogs it up in the neutral zone very well," Alfredsson said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't get as many goals as we would have liked on the chances we created in the first two periods."
