Daniel Ricciardo confident James Key can help Toro Rosso to improve – Formula 1 news
Toro Rosso driver, Daniel Ricciardo, has expressed his confidence that the team’s new technical director, James Key, can help the team to improve during the 2013 F1 season.
“There was only so much James and the guys could have done for this year,” Ricciardo told ESPNF1.com. “Once the car is there, it's there and you can bring some updates that can help, but a lot is in the chassis and in the mould. There are a few things that
came through in the last few races, but in terms of revamping the car it was always going to be pretty difficult after the summer break and that's why it was best to spend most of our time looking forward to next year.”
The driver said that Key is a very optimistic person who despite being very quietly spoken can get the messages across the team. He told that Key has set the goals high and is very ambitious. Ricciardo insisted that while he has not seen anything with his
own eyes at the factory yet but he can certainly visualise the progress the team will be making in 2013.
He said that he is not becoming over confident but is hoping they will be progressing up the grid during the upcoming season. He admitted that they are not getting excited until they establish something in the future.
Toro Rosso had a completely new driver line up for the 2012 F1 season including Ricciardo and his teammate Jean-Eric Vergne. The team hired Key as their new technical director in early September this year. They only scored 26 points throughout the season
and fell to the ninth place on the constructors’ grid as compared to their eighth during the 2011 F1 season.
Dietrich Mateschitz, owner of sister teams Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso, has warned the team that they need to improve. He said that even though Toro Rosso is a rookie project and the expectations from them are different as from Red Bull but that does
not mean that he is happy with the development of the team’s car. He insisted that the team requires significant improvements.
