Daniel Ricciardo says he will be gunning for points at Melbourne – Formula 1 news
Daniel Ricciardo says that he wants to be among the points in front of his home crowd.
The Aussie said that the Australian Grand Prix is always big deal for him and he will be going hard to score points, which to him is the main goal for this season.
Ricciardo drove for HRT in the previous season but was not able to score any points that may be due to the car he had. Now that he has joined Toro Rosso he hopes to join his skill and the better car to work and get the best results out for him.
“To finish in the points is the real goal that I'm after,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “I guess we'll see where our performance is on Saturday in qualifying.
“We'll try and have the best race we can but anything is possible. Even if qualifying doesn't go to plan, Sunday is a long race so I'll be staying positive until the end,” he said.
Ricciardo faces many challenges in his new role with Toro Rosso and one of the most important will be to beat his teammate and debutant Jean-Eric Vergne. Vergne has shown good skills in the GP2 series and in the young drivers programme.
He said that he might have bit of an edge over his teammate as he has had more races than him, while admitting that if Vergne end up in front of him over the weekend it will not look too good on him. He added that he will be disappointed with himself.
He also said that they have raced each other for a few years and knows well that he is more than a capable driver.
“For me, I've got to make sure I finish in front of him but I think we're definitely going to get the most out of the car and from the team's point of view that's very important. I'm relaxed and, once today and tomorrow is over, I'm in the car and that's
where I'll probably feel most at home,” he said.
