Daniel Ricciardo says opening points at 2012 Australian Grand Prix are ‘huge’ – Formula 1 news
Toro Rosso driver, Daniel Ricciardo says that the points he has attained at 2012 Australian Grand Prix is a ‘huge’ result for him after his broken front wing recovery during the first lap.
Ricciardo ended at ninth position at the end of the first race which according to him was a great finish.
After the collision with the Williams’ driver, Bruno Senna and several others during the race at the first corner, Ricciardo managed to make up two positions during the last lap and took his career’s first two points.
Moreover, he also overtook his teammate, Jean Eric Vergne to gain one of the positions in the final lap. However, when he was asked about passing his teammate behind, he said that it was not his main target.
“It's good, but I think so much else went on that it was not really my main focus,” he said. “Just to get some points was huge. I guess it does make it a bit more satisfying, but it would have been nice for both us to finish in the points and he just missed
out in 11th. We've both got good pace, we really do, and I'm not sure what tyres he was on at the same time as me, but if we can continue we should get some better results for the next few [races].”
In addition, he said that the first GP had always been quite unique for the team and points had given them a positive feeling for the season ahead for which they would make the best of the efforts to make the essential improvements and the necessary preparations.
Nonetheless, he said that he did not feel being carried away by his good performance at the season opener.
Besides, he said that he was very much pleased with the speed of the car when it started running again after the first corner collision.
Furthermore, he said that he would never have believed on someone saying that one could finish at ninth place after such an incident.
Moreover, he said that the safety car helped in catching up the contenders during the last lap and team improvised well during the race.
