Daniel Ross prevails in Round 3 of the ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro
Australia’s Daniel Ross emerged triumphant in the 18th heat of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro’s Round 3 (Round of 96) that went down at the renowned beach-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California,
on Wednesday, May 2.
The success in Round 3 carried Ross into the fourth round (Round of 48) of the competition. Brazil’s Jano Belo also advanced through into the next round of the competition by securing runner-up position.
Known as one of the most prestigious non-ASP World Tour event of the year, the Nike Lowers Pro attracts top talent from around the globe to join the local surfers in the pursuit for the coveted ASP ranking points and share of the huge prize purse that is
on offer. The site of Lower Trestles alone is enough to attract some a handful of international surfer, including ASP World Tour contenders, to join the contention for the event title.
The 18th heat of Round 3 saw Ross square off with his fellow countryperson Yadin Nicol, Hawaii’s Roy Powers and Brazil’s Belo in a four-man battle for survival.
None of the four surfers seemed 100 percent confident in the clean two-to-four foot waves that were on offer at the primary event site on Wednesday. Ross, however, managed to find a couple of good waves to get an upper hand in the battle. The Australian
surfer locked his first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat to post a 5.50 on the score-board. After a long and determined hunt, he found another juicy wave in the final minutes of the heat to unload a series of exquisite turns, earning a 7.00
for the effort to get to a heat-total of 12.50 points. The score held up until the end of the heat to see him through to victory.
Belo successfully extended his stay in the competition as well after scoring a 5.17 and 6.27 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 11.44 points, which served to put him in runner-up place.
Powers put on a pretty ordinary performance, scoring a 4.27 and 2.93 off his best-two waves before getting an interference call in the final minutes of the heat. As a result, he finished with a heat-total of 5.73 points.
Nicol finished fourth with a two-wave total of 5.50 points, which included a 3.67 and 1.83-point wave. Both Powers and Nicol got eliminated from the competition as a result.
