Daniel Sliwinski grabs Men’s 100m breaststroke gold: Day two – British Gas Swimming Nationals
Daniel Sliwinski of Preston grabbed the title of Men’s 100m breaststroke on day two of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Nationals at the London Aquatics Centre on Sunday, March 4.
With his commendable win in the breaststroke discipline, the 21-year-old Sliwinski has confirmed his spot in the British team for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
He remained prominently ahead of his competitors in the first lap but faced strong contest from Craig Benson of Warrender Ba in the second lap. With his incredible efforts in the two-lap breaststroke swim, Sliwinski sprinted his way towards the finishing wall in a time of 1 minute and 00.09 seconds.
The gold medallist was trailed by Benson, who remained 0.38 seconds slower and settled on the victory stand for silver medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 00.47 seconds. He was trailed by Michael Jamieson of Edinburgh University, who remained just 0.03 seconds slower from overwhelming the efforts of his former finisher and tapped the finishing wall with an effort of 1 minute and 00.50 seconds for bronze medal.
Moments later, the arena experienced ruthless aggression of their favourite, Rebecca Adlington of Nova Cent’n, who conquered the title of Women’s 400m freestyle final. Adlington defended her 400m national title with great audacity and upset her challengers by submitting an effort of 4 minutes and 02.35 seconds for gold medal.
The 23-year-old Adlington faced no trouble in ensuring her berth in the British team to the forthcoming Olympics. She was followed by Joanne Jackson of Loughborough University, who stayed 4.12 seconds slower from the champion and ended his swim in a time of 4 minutes and 06.47 seconds.
The silver medallist remained in a lead of almost one second over Eleanor Faulkner of Co Sheffield, who proved her mettle for the third finest spot of the race by clocking a time of 4 minutes and 07.25 seconds.
The arena enjoyed splendid efforts of all participants in their respective events whereas the winners were invited on the victory stand for their gruelling efforts after the session. In addition, the championship will end on March 10 after the conclusion of all events.
