Daniel Vancsik shoots course-record 62 to lead the Rolex Trophy
While all eyes were on Kristoffer Broberg on Wednesday, waiting to see how he would respond after a close finish at last week’s ECCO Tour Championship, Daniel Vancsik was quietly using his putter to post a course-record 62 in the opening round of the limited-field Rolex Trophy.
Argentine Vancsik closed with a 30 at the Golf Club de Geneve in Geneva, Switzerland, to grab an early lead over in-form Broberg.
The Misiones native posted four before the turn followed by six on the outward nine, despite using a three-wood off the tee throughout the week.
While playing the ECCO Tour Championship last week, he broke his driver and asked for the replacement in Swiss capital. However, the new driver failed to reach him on time. Therefore, he had to choose something from his bag for the opening round.
“My driver will be arriving tonight, but after the way I played I don’t think I’ll put it in the bag!” he said. “My three wood’s pretty long and the course is quite short, so I didn’t really miss my driver today. I played very, very well – I only missed one green, on the sixth hole. But I got up and down for par, and after that the game felt very easy”.
According to him, he attacked the pins throughout the day and supported his offensive game with his putter. He told that he was working with his game on the greens for the last seven or eight weeks and the hard work finally paid him off in Geneva.
“I’ve been playing better and better the last seven or eight weeks, but I haven’t been putting very well,” he said. “So I’ve been working very hard on the practice green, and today you saw the results”.
In the meantime, Broberg also continued his great form on the tour and recorded seven birdies along with a sparkling eagle to take the second spot on the leaderboard with a nine-under par 63.
He currently holds the fourth spot in the Challenge Tour Order of Merit after just four starts that he has made so far this year.
