Daniel Vettori steps down as the New Zealand captain
Daniel Vettori has announced he is stepping down as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754’s Test skipper and will give away the captaincy in all formats of the game after the 2011 World Cup. He will, however, continue to provide his services as a player to the Kiwis.
Vettori has stated that he had made plans to give up the captaincy, after the World Cup, in 2007 when he took over from former skipper Stephen Fleming. Vettori’s stint as Test captain has not been a satisfying one for the New Zealand team. Under him, the
Black Caps have lost 9 Test series out of 13 in the span 3 years.
The only major Test wins the Kiwi’s have secured during Vettori’s reign were against England and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755. Vettori also acknowledged that these victories were the highlight of his Test captaincy and stated that the team is improving.
He said, “The Test win against England and the Test win against Pakistan last year were highlights. Just seeing a group of young guys come into the team. It's a vastly different outfit from the one I started captaining and I think there are some really talented
players there."
Despite his side’s poor performance, Vettori has by far been the most consistent player for the Kiwis with both bat and ball. During his captaincy, he has taken the highest number of wickets, 116 with an average of 33.38, with Chris Martin in second spot
with 93 dismissals.
He has performed with the bat as well, scoring 1917 runs with 4 centuries and 9 fifties. His tally of runs has been surpassed only by two team-mates, during the same period, Ross http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915 and Brendon McCullum.
Vettori too has expressed his satisfaction over the performance he has given for his side during his time as the Test captain. He also added that the team composition has improved over the years and some key players need to get back into form to start producing
the required results.
Vettori said, “If we can get the most out of the likes of Taylor, Ryder, McCullum, Guptill and Williamson in the years to come, I think there's an exciting team there. We still need to find fast bowlers coming in. You always want to find guys who can penetrate,
so if they come along, that would be great”
The left arm spinner’s next assignment is to lead the New Zealand team in the upcoming 6 match one-day international (ODI) series, at home, against Pakistan. The opening match of the series is scheduled to be played on Saturday, 22 January at http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864.
