Daniel Vettori to miss the Headingley Test – Cricket News

Daniel Vettori, the former New Zealand captain, has been ruled out of the last Test of the two-match series against England due to lack of preparation; however, the Kiwi skipper, Brendon McCullum, still believes that the left-arm
spinner has a future in international cricket.
Bruce Martin, the left-arm spinner, who took part in the opening fixture at the Lord’s, faced a calf injury and was ruled out of the remaining series. Vettori, who played his last Test almost a year ago, was called up to the squad
as Martin’s replacement.
The 34-year-old cricketer however, did not look impressive in the nets and the team management has decided to go in with an all-pace bowling attack.
The skipper expressed that the side tried to give enough time to Vettori to regain his rhythm but the left-arm spinner is not ready as yet.
“Dan is out of the game, unfortunately. We gave it our best shot with him but he didn't scrub up that well today and didn't have the confidence to go into a five-day game,” said McCullum.
Having picked up more than 650 scalps at the highest stage of the game, Vettori is considered to be one of the finest left-arm spinners of the modern era. Apart from his expertise with the ball, the former captain is more than
handy with the bat, with almost seven thousand international runs under his belt.
The wicketkeeper/batsman admitted that Vettori has been a great servant of New Zealand cricket over the years and feels that he has a role to play for the Black Caps in future. However, McCullum is not sure that Vettori would be
able to play in all the three formats of international cricket in future.
“It was just a bridge too far. It would be silly for us to sweep away 112 Test matches, nearly 400 wickets and six Test centuries,” the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 captain added. “It would be nice to think that he'd be able to play every game
in all three forms but it's not realistic. But I certainly see a place for him in the team.”
With England leading the series 1-0, the second Test is going to start today at Headingley.
