Daniel Wells defeats Lee Walker in the semifinal of the 2011 European Snooker Championship
Welsh National Champion, Daniel Wells surged into the final of 2011 European Snooker Championship after beating Lee Walker 6-4 in the all-Wales semi-final at the Dedeman Hotel in Sofia on Thursday,
June 16. Wells will meet the Irishman, Vincent Muldoon, in the final match on Friday, June 17 at the same arena.
The best-of-11 frame match was a thriller in the true sense of the word, as both Welshmen took the match to new levels with their tremendous snooker skills. Walker came back from 5-1 down to move
within one frame at 5-4 but lost the 10th frame unfortunately.
The Neath potter, Wells made the first run as the match started and fired a cracking knock of 32 in reply to Walker’s 40-point clearance to win the first scrappy frame by 57-47. Wells extended his
one-frame lead to 2-0 after he grabbed the second frame by the scoreline of 57-18 with the help of some decent breaks during the frame.
Walker fought back in the third frame with a stunning knock of 72 to nudge the Welsh National Champion down 34-89 and move within one frame up at 2-1. After that, Walker could not make another frame,
as his 22-year-old opponent took three consecutive frames 71-9, 65-8 and 76-30, firing two superb knocks of 43 and 47 to go 5-1 up.
At this particular stage, Walker had to pull up his socks. The 35-year-old sparked his cue brilliantly in the later part of the game and grabbed the next three frames after Wells went 5-1 up. Some
scintillating clearances of 72, 57 and 46 brought Walker at 5-4 against his compatriot.
The 10th frame proved to be the last as Wells fired a fine clearance of 47 to take the victory by 6-4 and storm into the final against the Irishman, Vincent Muldoon. Wells has already qualified
for the main tour of the 2011-12 Snooker Season.
The overall scoreline of the match is given below.
Daniel Wells 6-4 Lee Walker
57(32)-47(40), 57-18, 34-89(72), 71(43)-9, 65-8, 76(47)-30, 1-81(72), 21-73(57), 19-66(46), 72(47)-31
