Daniel Wells faces James Wattana in the qualifiers of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
Welshman Daniel Wells will meet Thailand’s James Wattana in his first qualifier of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open on Monday, June 27 at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield. Wells is determined
to grab a spot at the Last-32 stage of Australian Goldfields Open 2011 and hopes he can beat Wattana in the match.
The current Welsh National Champion grabbed the pro tour card a month ago after he won the national championship. Before making his entry into the first round of Australian event, he has to win four
matches in the qualifying session.
Wells has been practicing in Sheffield with Michael White and Ryan Day. He believes that after a hard practicing session, he can make a strong impact at the baize in Sheffield arena. Beating Wattana
will be a tough challenge for the youngster.
Wells spoke to a local website, “James was in Sheffield with me back in the day so I know a lot about his game. It's going to be tough. He's an experienced player who still has the hunger, but I know
I'm capable of beating him.”
He added, “I've never been to Australia. I'd love to be going next month, but I can't get carried away. There's a lot of hard work to be done to make it that far.”
The 22-year-old Wells started his season with Players Tour Championships (PTC) Event 1 but could not maintain his strong winning run as he crashed out of tournament in the very first round at the
hands of Joe Jogia.
He said in his interview, “I played in the PTC1 event last week, but lost my first match 4-0 to Joe Jogia. He's a great player I've always rated, but it was the worst possible start I could have made
to the season. I've got to remember they're short matches in the PTCs, so results like that can happen. I'm not too down about it.”
The Neath potter played outstandingly in 2011 European Snooker Championship as he finished on top of his group and made it to the finals. He faces Ireland’s Vincent Muldoon, who was one of the favourites
to win the title. Wells defeated Muldoon convincingly by a scoreline of 7-4 in the final at Dedeman Hotel, Sofia.
