Daniel Wells faces compatriot Lee Walker in semi-final of the 2011 European Snooker Championship
Welshman, Daniel Wells, will meet compatriot Lee Walker, in the semi-final clash of the 2011 European Snooker Championship on Thursday, June 16, at the Dedeman Hotel in Sofia, Bulgaria. The pair has been outstanding throughout the championship and their
match-up is expected be a thriller.
The championship is organised by the European Billiards and Snooker Association (EBSA) and the winner of this round-robin formatted event will fill the 100th spot of professional tour players for the 2011-12 snooker season, commencing on Saturday,
June 18, at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield. The season will initiate with the launch of the Players Tour Championship (PTC).
Daniel Wells made a strong run during the group matches of the event, ousting six cueists of the group to grab the second place in Group H. He lost only one match against Englishman, Martin O’Donnell, who will face Vincent Muldoon in the second semi-final
clash.
The 23-year-old Wells, made his way to last-32 after clinching six victories in the group stage and face Anthony Brabin from Cyprus. The current Welsh National Champion faced a minor challenge from Brabin, but managed to nudge him 4-2 down in the end.
After beating Malta’s Alex Borg in the last-16 by the score line of 5-1, the Neath potter, Wells, went head-to-head against the pro tour qualifier from Q School, Adam Duffy, in the quarter-finals. Wells clinched victory by 5-1 in the match, to set up a clash
with Walker in his next encounter.
The 35-year-old Walker finished on top of his group after the round-robin matches of the event and surged into the last-32 against Austria’s Paul Schopf. Walker grabbed a splendid victory over Schopf, when he whitewashed the Austrian 4-0, to book his spot
in the last-16.
Germany’s Lasse Münstermann then faced Walker in a last-16 clash. The German crashed out of the tournament by a score of 5-0. Walker next met former European Snooker Champion, Kevin Van Hove of Belgium, in the quarter-final. The Belgian could not prove to
be a strong contender during the match-up and Walker took the game 5-1 in the end.
Wells has already qualified for the main tour of the 2011-12 snooker season on the basis of his National Championship title, while Walker still has one chance to make it to the pro tour, as he failed to win the tour ticket in Q School.
