Daniel Wells ousts Vincent Muldoon in final of 2011 European Snooker Championship at Dedeman Hotel
Welsh National champion and 2011-12 Snooker Season qualifier, Daniel Wells grabbed the 2011 European Snooker Championship title after beating former Irish National Champion Vincent Muldoon, by a scoreline
of 7-4. The final match-up was played at the Dedeman Hotel in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia on Friday, June 17.
The 22-year-old Wells sprang back after he was trailing 2-3 and took four consecutive frames to make it 5-3. Muldoon could not hold his own in the later part of the game and crashed 7-4 in the end.
However, the Irishman has already occupied the final place in the main tour of the 2011-12 Snooker Season.
Wells took the first scrappy frame at 112-25 with two stunning knocks of 69 and 43 to lead 1-0 in the match. The second frame was a close encounter as both potters tussled to win it but in the end,
Wells clinched it with just a two-point difference at 59-57 and led 2-0.
Muldoon came back strongly after tumbling 2-0 down and fired a couple of cracking knocks to win three consecutive frames at 13-79, 24-62 and 31-99. A half-century clearance of 53 from Wells in the
sixth frame brought the scores level at 3-3, as Wells took the frame 58-9.
However, it was Wells' turn to shift to top gear as he swept the table with some tremendous snooker shots, grabbing the next three frames to make it 6-3. The Welshman needed one frame to win the best-of-13
frame match, which he took by 67-56 after pocketing a 48-point clearance.
While speaking to the local media after the victory, Wells said, "I'm absolutely thrilled. Before I came out here I was determined to round off my amateur career by winning and I've managed to do
it. It is such a prestigious event with so many good players that this will always stand as one of my best achievements."
Both Wells and Muldoon have already qualified for the main tour of 2011-12 Snooker Season, that begins on Saturday, June 18 with first event of Players Tour Championship at the World Snooker Academy
in Sheffield.
