Daniels Brands outplays Jurgen Zopp to reach the quarter-finals – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2012
In the second round clash between the two qualifiers, Daniel Brands of Germany overcame the Estonian opponent, Jurgen Zopp, at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy. The Wednesday’s contest witnessed Brands registering a straight sets
victory at 7-6(3), 6-3, marching into the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event in Bucharest, Romania.
It took just 90 minutes for the clash to settle down in the 119th ranked German’s favour. Zopp has been phenomenal in the qualifying draw and didn’t even drop a single set to make it to the main rounds of the tournament.
He won his opening round match against the local wildcard, Victor Crivoi, in straight sets as well but couldn’t deliver his best in the Wednesday’s battle against Brands. He posed some serious resistance in the opening set and managed to drag it into the tie-breaker
round but eventually fell in the decider to suffer the first jolt. Brands didn’t give him much chance in the following set to have an impact on the game and cruised his way to victory in an emphatic fashion.
It was the first face-off between these two players in their professional careers and the German didn’t take long to get under the skin of Zopp. Brands bettered his opponent in every segment of the game and registered his second
victory on the 2012 ATP World Tour. He belted 69 percent of his first serve on target, banging in 10 thudding aces and committing just two double faults in the entire matchup. Brands dropped nine points on his first serve, bagging 36 out of 45, en route to
victory and broke the Estonian’s serve two out of seven times in the contest. Zopp had merely one break chance, which he converted in the opener and kept trailing in the second set to finish on the losing side in the end.
Brands will either face the fourth seeded Serbian, Viktor Troicki or the unseeded fellow compatriot, Matthias Bachinger, in the quarter-final rounds of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy. Troicki and Bachinger will go one-on-one in
the second round contest on Thursday and the winner will book a date with Brands in the round of eight.
