Danish Kaneria accuses ECB for being discriminate - Cricket News Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danish-Kaneria-c1314, the disgraced Pakistan leg-spinner, has accused the English Cricket Board’s (ECB) disciplinary panel of "unfair treatment" and "discrimination".
"The ECB panel behavior was discriminatory and I am confident that we will win our appeal against the ban," Kaneria told Press Trust of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750.
Earlier, the lawyer for the former Test player, Steven Hourigan, had also accused the English Board of reaching a "pre-determined" judgment against his client.
Last week, the English Panel had banned the discarded Pakistan Test bowler for life, given his involvement in a spot-fixing incident during the 2009 English county season. The International Cricket Council’s (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Malaysia-c2949,
also called for a global lifetime ban on the Pakistan spinner.
The panel, headed by Chairman Gerard Elias QC, David Gabbitass and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jamie-Dalrymple-c1658, in their concluding remarks termed Kaneria as “a grave danger to the game” as well as a “recruiter of spot-fixers”, who influenced his young teammate Mervyn Westfield for
the corruption while bringing the game into disrepute.
Kaneria, who represented http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in 61 Tests and 18 One Day Internationals (ODI) in a career spanning ten years, had also played for Essex County Cricket Club for 6 seasons, from 2004 till 2010.
Westfield pleaded guilty to the spot-fixing charges and also admitted to have accepted £6000 for underperforming in a match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782 in 2009. He was jailed for four months and banned for five years from cricket, but later he provided the key evidence
against Kaneria.
However, Kaneria’s legal team remained unsatisfied with the proceedings, and has called for an open hearing, claiming that their client was not given a fair chance and was made a scapegoat just because he was an outsider.
"What surprised me and my lawyer was that the panel didn't push Westfield to produce proper evidence to support his allegations against me. It appeared to me as if they had taken a decision to ban me even before the hearing started," the Pakistan player
said.
"There was no incriminating or strong evidence against me. Interestingly, even the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 players who appeared during the trial didn't support the allegations made by Westfield," Kaneria said.
