The disciplinary panel set up by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), have called Danish Kaneria and Mervyn Westfield, the former Essex bowlers to appear for a hearing. The inquiry is well underway to investigate the alleged spot-fixing in 2009. Earlier,
Westfield was jailed for four months over the scam after he admitted to a corruption charge in a match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782 in September 2009. International Cricket Council (ICC) had supported the jail term given to the 23-year-old fast bowler.
"While the ICC takes no pleasure from anyone being sent to jail, it is a decision of the court we support," http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719, the ICC chief executive said.
"The ICC operates a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and will use everything within its power to ensure that any corrupt activity within the game is comprehensively investigated and, where possible, robustly prosecuted. We have always stated that we
will follow every possible avenue to ensure the integrity of cricket is protected,” he added.
The former Essex fast bowler received a payment of £6,000 to concede 12 runs in his first over during a 40-over English county match. The judge, while sentencing Westfield, blamed his former teammate for orchestrating the whole scam and also remarked that
the Pakistani bowler "had made similar approaches to other Essex players who had laughed them off as a joke".
Kaneria, who was previously cleared by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 police in October 2010, had pleaded not guilty to the charges although, the bowler was also warned by the ICC in 2008 over his link with a bookmaker. The 31-year-old leg-spinner, who has played 61 Tests and has
taken 261 wickets is also Pakistan’s most successful spin bowler, continues to claim his innocence.
His lawyer Farogh Naseem, while talking to the Associated Press via telephone claimed, "Such allegations have no strength and it holds no water," and questioned the credibility of these new allegations once his client has already been cleared by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625
and British Police. The hearing will be chaired by ECB's Cricket Discipline Commission’s Gerard Elias QC, who is also its chairman. The hearing is likely to last four days after it was delayed due to the late arrival of the Pakistani leg-spinner.
