Danish Kaneria banned by PCB pending appeal outcome – Cricket News Update
Out-of-favour leg-spinner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danish-Kaneria-c1314, has been banned by the Pakistan Cricket Board from playing any form of official cricket in the country, until the outcome of his appeal against the life-ban issued to him by the England and Wales Cricket Board on grounds of corruption.
Kaneria’s name cropped up in the spot-fixing scandal earlier this year – while affiliated with County club Essex, he had previously been arrested, along with pacer Mervyn Westfield, by the Essex police when the case first came to light, but was later released owing to insufficient evidence.
However, earlier this year, Westfield was tried and sentenced for having deliberately underperformed in order to concede a fixed amount of runs during the first over of an http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782 match in September 2009. He pleaded guilty to the charge, and also went on to name Kaneria as the middleman who had set up the deal, and induced Westfield to accept corrupt payments in exchange for underperforming – thus bringing the game into disrepute.
While Kaneria vehemently denied all charges, he was summoned to an http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 and Wales Cricket Board disciplinary hearing last month, along with Westfield who was released early from prison. The youngster was handed a 5-year ban (although he will be permitted to play club cricket after 3 years), while Kaneria was banned for life from the sport.
The 31-year-old has dubbed the decision unfair, and has expressed the intent to challenge the verdict, although he has yet to lodge a formal appeal.
According to the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ashraf-c46397 announced the decision to ban the spinner, pending the outcome of his appeal, at a meeting of the board’s integrity committee on Monday this week, adding that the board would uphold the sanctions imposed by the ECB.
Kaneria, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755’s highest wicket-taking spinner (with 276 international wickets to his credit), and fourth highest Test wicket-taker (261 scalps from 61 Tests), has not been considered by national selectors since 2010, and has since been playing in the domestic circuit for Habib Bank Limited and the Karachi Zebras. The cricketer finished as one of the highest wicket-takers in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy last season (a domestic first-class tournament).
However, in the case that he loses his appeal, Kaneria will be forced to withdraw from the domestic scene as well, and HBL have already written to the PCB to seek clarification regarding the leg-spinner’s cricketing status.
