Danish Kaneria banned for the lifetime by ECB – Cricket News Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after his involvement in spot-fixing during a county game in 2010 has been proved.
His teammate at http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783, Mervyn Westfield has also been handed over a five-year ban, although, the fast bowler will be able to play club cricket after three years.
Kaneria came through the ranks of junior cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 and represented his country at the under-19 level before making his way to the Test team, when he made his debut against England at Faisalabad in 2000.
The Karachi-born cricketer remained an integral part of the national team for a number of years before he was ousted at the very last moment from the squad, which took on http://www.senore.com/Cricket/United-Arab-Emirates-c3033 (UAE) in 2010. Since
then, the lanky leg-spinner has not played any international cricket.
However, with 261 scalps, he remains one of the best spinners in Pakistan’s history.
According to ECB, Danish can no longer take part in any cricket event which has been recognised by England. This effectively means that the 31-year-old’s career in professional cricket is almost over.
In his judgement, Gerard Elias QC said that the Pakistani leg-spinner has been convicted for the betterment of cricket as he brought disrepute to the sport, which was once known as the ‘gentlemen’s game’.
"We regard Danish Kaneria as a grave danger to the game of cricket and we must take every appropriate step to protect our game from his corrupt activities," Elias expressed.
ECB has welcomed the verdict of Elias and thinks that the punishments given to the players will turn out to be a massive lesson for the young cricketers.
An ECB statement read: "ECB welcomes today's decisions by the Disciplinary Panel following the hearing held in London. This sends a very clear message to everyone involved in the sport that corrupt activities will not be tolerated and those individuals who
are alleged to have breached the ECB's anti-corruption regulations will be fully investigated and where appropriate made subject to the full ECB disciplinary process."
