http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 clearance letter– Cricket News Update
Out of favour Pakistani bowler, Danish Kaneria, has cleared the air regarding his claim that the ICC had supposedly issued him a clearance letter.
While the document is indeed authenticated, it does not fully clarify his innocence over the whole spot-fixing saga, further affirming the board’s stance of not giving the player a clear signal to resume his international duties.
“I want to clarify these points because the media has [misquoted] me a little by saying I said I have a clearance letter from the ICC. What I have is a letter from the ICC,” he explained, adding that he had shown the letter to the PCB’s integrity committee.
“The letter says clearly the ICC neither issues any clearance nor is any player required to obtain such clearance from the ICC. I have this letter, which also says ‘the ICC ACSU is not conducting any investigation of your client under the ICC anti-corruption law.’”
The leg-spinner was arrested but later cleared of all charges by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 police when the spot-fixing scandal first emerged in late 2010. However, the controversy was reignited recently, at the trial of former Essex bowler Mervyn Westfield, whose solicitor claimed that Kaneria (Westfield’s then county teammate) had approached his client with the illegal offer.
The 23-year-old has been given a four-month prison sentence, and the focus has now shifted to the Men In Green player, who is caught in the glare of renewed allegations, and struggling to defend himself.
Kaneria’s claim that he had been cleared by the ICC and ECB was categorically denied by both boards in a joint statement, with the ICC explaining that the letter in question simply stated that an investigation was being carried out by Essex police, and the issuance of a clearance certificate was up to the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board (PCB).
The 31-year-old has yet to receive clearance from the PCB’s integrity committee, and is currently playing for Sindh in the domestic circuit. His attempts to get his unofficial suspension from the national squad lifted, including an appeal in the Sindh High Court, have not yielded any positive results.
The player has stated that he is innocent, and ready to defend himself, whenever the PCB’s integrity committee chooses to summon him.
