Danish Kaneria will appeal against the life ban - Cricket News Update
Tainted Pakistan cricket, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danish-Kaneria-c1314, has resolved to clear his name as he will be appealing against the lifetime ban while terming the decision as “very unfair” and calling himself “an honest man”. He made these comments, following a decision by an
English Cricket Board (ECB) panel due to his involvement in spot-fixing.
The three-man disciplinary panel consisted of Gerard Elias QC, David Gabbitass and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jamie-Dalrymple-c1658 called the Pakistan leg-spinner "a grave danger to the game of cricket" and severely criticised his defense arguments.
While speaking to Sky Sports News, the 31-year-old was visibly disturbed by the verdict that could easily end his career. "I'm very upset about this decision,” he said. “For what reason they have convicted me I do not know. It is a very, very unfair decision
against me. I've come all the way from Pakistan to say the truth,” the spinner added.
During the hearing, the key evidence against Kaneria came from his former Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield, who earlier had admitted to his corruption and was jailed for four months. In 2009, during a county match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782, the 24-year-old received
£6,000 in return to underperform.
According to Westfield, Kaneria made him the offer and later both men went to a night club where he introduced him to a bookmaker. The bookmaker was later confirmed as Anu Bhatt by Anti Corruption Unit’s (ACU) investigator and security officer, Alan Peacock,
who also appeared in the hearing.
According to Peacock’s testimony the Karachi based bowler was already cautioned by the ACU for his connections with Bhat, as back as in 2008.
The disciplinary panel concluded that Kaneria acted as recruiter of spot-fixers. They further added, that during his time at http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783, he tried to lure many players in his team, persuaded and pressurised Westfield, and was present when the payments for underperforming
were received by his 23-year-old teammate.
Kaneria, who played 61 Tests for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 with 261 wickets, retorted the claims made by Westfield. "The person who has committed the crime, gone to prison, been telling lies to police, telling lies in court - he has told lies even in the tribunal," he said.
"I'm not lying. I'm telling the truth. I've been telling the truth all the way,” the Karachi-based bowler concluded.
