Danish Royal visits the courts
Danish Royal Frederik made a stop at the Danish Open in Copenhagen, meeting with Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, who is currently the world number three on the Sony Ericsson WTA tour.
The Danish Open is the WTA tour’s first event in Denmark. The Crown Prince has offered support to Wozniacki from an early age, as she has become the first Top 10 player to come out of Denmark.
"I gave Caroline funding when she was 14 and have followed her career for several years now, and it's very exciting to see her develop into the great player she is today," Frederik said. "It is exceptional to be the world's No.3 player."
Crown Prince Frederik is himself no stranger to sports, and is an avid athlete, having competed in several marathons, and taken part in sailing competitions. Being part of the International Olympic Committee, Frederik supports various sports organizations.
"It's hard to define economically what it will mean, but it is something everyone is talking about. They can talk about Denmark winning the European Championships in 1992, and now we can talk about Caroline. We are very proud of her. She represents the sport of tennis in the best way possible," the Crown Prince stated when asked about his thoughts regarding the new Danish Open event.
Following her 6-2, 6-3 first round victory over Croatia’s Petra Martic, Wozniacki is set to play her round two match against Czech Republic’s Iveta Benesova. Home support must have been a motivational factor for the young Dane, as she has just now come off a losing streak continuing since April, without making it past the quarterfinal round of any tour event.
"I'm really happy to be through," said Wozniacki. "It's nice to win my first match in front of the home crowd. It was a great atmosphere out there."
