Danish sprinter Matti Breschel misses the World Championships 2011 – Cycling News
Matti Breschel will miss the opportunity to lead his team at the World Championships 2011 as he has ruled himself out of the tournament. The Danish rider was keen to participate in the tour but unfortunately broke two of his fingers while riding at the Vuelta
a Espana 2011. He was participating at the Vuelta as a final preparation for the World Championships but unfortunately could not get past the sixth stage as he crashed out of the event.
After the crash doctors instructed team Rabobank that the cyclist should rest for a few days and the hand will be operated on after that. Breschel was so keen to continue riding as he said, “I hope they [doctors] just need to keep quiet-you don’t use the
hands so much when you ride, so maybe I can ride soon. But the fingers are well and truly crashed.”
Matti Breschel finished second at the World Championships last year behind the Norwegian rider Thor Hushovd after a gruelling race. He was hopeful to ride the Championships even after the Vuelta crash, but unfortunately could not recover soon enough. The
Danish national coach Lars Bonde told Ekstrabladet.dk, “It was Matti himself, who in a conversation with me said: ‘I cannot see any real progress, and we have to shut it down this time.’”
Breschel will hence not be a part of Danish team this year at the World Championships and his absence will be truly missed by the team as he is a world class sprinter. Lars mentioned that since the last three World Championships, Breschel has shown his class
and has won two medals for his country. His absence clearly means fewer medals for Denmark this year.
The final team roster for the World Championships has not been announced yet. However, Alex Rasmussen and Jakob Fuglsang can be the best option to represent Denmark in time trials. It is most likely that riders like Lars Bak, Rasmussen, Chris Anker, Anders
Lund, Jakob Fuglsang, Michael Morkov and Nicki Sorensen will secure their places in the Danish team for the World Championships 2011.
