Danny Ainge cannot rule out possibility of Boston Celtics veteran Kevin Garnett playing elsewhere – NBA Update
The Boston Celtics are set for an overhaul this summer as the Big Three put together in 2007, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, look to step down and handle over the mantle to younger guys. Two of those players, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, are at
the end of their contracts and could be heading out to play for other franchises.
While Allen’s departure is seen as acceptable for most observers, with Garnett that is not the case. The fiery power forward has become an icon since coming over to Boston and some quarters suggest the player would rather retire than don another NBA jersey.
While Celtics President Danny Ainge holds the same view, he recently admitted that he could not rule out the possibility of Kevin signing elsewhere. It is not yet clear what team Boston will put together for next season, or what role will Kevin Garnett have
in that side, so there is a chance the former Minnesota Timberwolves star packs his bag to head out.
"I don't think that's what he wants to do, but it is a possibility, sure," Ainge said according to ESPN. "I didn't get that feeling, but he definitely has that option. Who knows what happens over the course of time?”
Ainge though reiterated that he believed in the end Kevin’s heart lies in Boston and he was hopeful the TD Garden faithful would see him in the team’s colours once again.
"I hope that he wants to come back. That's sort of been the indication that, if he's going to play, that he would like to come back to Boston. That's where we are right now."
As to the final decision, Danny made it clear that it was totally up to Kevin. The forward’s contract situation and Boston’s own cap space issues mean that the franchise is put in a tough situation as he mulls his future, but Kevin has done more than enough
to earn that time.
"I don't really want to push Kevin... right now, I'm letting him get back to me and hopefully he'll do that soon." Ainge remarked.
