Danny Ainge looking to make wholesale changes at the Boston Celtics – NBA Update
Recent reports suggest that the Boston Celtics are exploring multiple trade options and could be ready to pull off some surprising moves. The Celtics President of Basketball Operations, Danny Ainge, is reportedly busy working the
phones as he searches for ways to improve the team.
Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers signed a 5 year multi-million dollar contract extension just this summer. And with the team’s core of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo all coming back next season, the wider
NBA audience could be forgiven for thinking that the Celtics will give it another go with the current set up.
However insiders believe that Rivers was signed on to do a rebuilding job rather than to lead a last hurrah of the aging squad. The Celtics President is known to make bold moves in the trade market and people shouldn’t be surprised
if he trades one or two of the bigger players on the team.
The mid season offloading of Kendrick Perkins, an established member of the team who had the support of the roster, is enough reason to believe that Danny Ainge will not shy away from any deal.
A source familiar with the Boston Celtics revealed that Ainge is definitely keeping busy this summer and nobody on the Roster could be guaranteed to start next season with the Celtics,
“I think he’s talking about moving everybody. I really do,” said the source.
Boston Celtics player Paul Pierce has spent his entire career at the franchise and is regarded as a hero among the fans so he should be safe. A man following his footsteps is Rajon Rondo, who has raised his game in recent years
to become one of the premier point guards in the league and is pretty young, so the Celtics could build their future around him.
However the insider said that even Rondo could be moved if Danny Ainge finds the opportunity for a blockbuster trade,
“I would throw Rajon Rondo on that list as well. … He has explored dealing Rajon Rondo in the past. He has talked to other GMs about him in the past. I’m not saying he’s been willing to pull the trigger in the past, but Rajon Rondo
has been on the table in the past year or so.”
Danny Ainge played at the Boston Celtics in the Larry Bird era and won two NBA World Championships with the team. However he saw the great team falter at the end as the Celtics went without a Championship for around two decades.
Ainge believes that team should have been broken up earlier to continue the success of the Celtics and that has shaped his approach of the current situation at the Boston Celtics.
