Danny Buderus’ asks Super League to stop outflow of talent to Australia - Rugby
While talking to the reporters on Wednesday, October 5, Danny Buderus of Leeds Rhinos warns the Rugby Football League (RFL) to keep a check on the serious out-flux of talent from Super League to Australia.
Buderus, himself is bowing out of Super League, despite having a year remaining on his contract with Rhinos, as he has inked a one-year deal with his former National Rugby League (NRL) club, Newcastle Knights.
The player is all set to make his farewell appearance with Rhinos along with the club’s co-captain, James Graham, at the Engage Super League Grand Final showdown. The clash has been scheduled to take place at Old Trafford against St. Helens.
Graham, who has co-captained Rhinos along with Paul Wellen for almost a year, will also exit Super League after the final on Saturday night, to join with NRL franchise, Canterbury Bulldogs. The player is at the climax of his playing career and too good a
talent to miss out on. His move along with Sam Burgess and Gareth Ellis’ is raising eye-brows in Super League quarters because this trend will harm the league. Buderus wants the Rugby League authorities to take notice of it before it is too late.
While referring to the worrisome trend of major rugby league talent moving down under, the 33-year-old Leeds hooker said, "It will be interesting to see how James goes. Sam has made a huge impact on and off the field, Gaz Ellis has been player of the year
at his club for three years in a row and you'd like to think James Graham will go out there and play really well as well. There's Luke Burgess out there as well and I can understand players wanting to go. But, from an English point of view, you don't want
your best players out there."
He further added that the entire focus needs to be on Super League, to make it into the best of its kind. In order to do that, players of high calibre are needed to be retained at Super League.
Buderus, who himself is the part of the exodus of talent, singles himself out from the rest by the fact that his career has almost wound up, with only one more year remaining before he leaves the playing role.
