Danny Care glad to be back – Rugby News Update
Danny Care, the 25-year-old Harlequins and England scrum-half, has been called back into the England team for the tour of South Africa, after being out of favour for nearly a year.
Care had been sidelined by Stuart Lancaster, the head coach of England prior to the tour, as the England coach stated that Care cannot be ‘trusted’, following his off field antics. However, Lancaster had a change of heart for the Quins scrum-half, who enjoyed
a brilliant season in the Aviva Premiership, as his club went to claim their first rugby title.
Care was left out of the 2012 Six Nations squad that came behind Wales, and he felt that it was tough for him to sit back and watch.
He said, “It was horrible and it was my own doing, which was a hard thing to take. The chat coming out of the camp was that it was so positive and it sounded like a good place to be. I definitely learnt my lesson the hard way.”
He further added, "All I got told by Stuart was to get my head on my club rugby, play well and I would get another shot. He has been true to his word and I thank him for that."
Care is not guaranteed a place in the squad, with Lancaster stating that he would have to earn his spot back. It is a second reincarnation for the scrum-half, who feels that he is the new boy in the England squad yet again, even though he made his debut
for England against New Zealand at Auckland, on June 14, 2008, nearly 4 years ago.
England is due to play two midweek games on their tour of South Africa, along with playing a three-match test series. Care is due to get his chance in the first tour game against the South African Barbarians (South) on Wednesday, and if he performs well,
he could be in line for a test place on the weekend.
