Danny Chia aims a victory in the Maybank Malaysian Open – Golf News
After a troublesome season that saw Danny Chia missing most of the tournaments due to injuries, he is now making a return to the field of the US$2.5mil Maybank Malaysian Open golf championship.
Chia had to rely on pain killers when he participated in any event last year. He has now confirmed that he is completely fit to play normal golf again, without the help of pain killers.
“I actually took a lot of pain killers to compete in a lot of events, which is not good for my body,” said Chia, a winner on the Asian Tour.
He said that the injury really bothered him throughout the season, which made him think about his health seriously.
Therefore, he took his name out of several events in the first quarter of the 2012 season to give his back a rest.
According to him, missing the tournaments early in the season may help him in recording a good finish at the Malaysian Open.
“I’m very happy I did that because I’m pretty much pain free and my injury hasn’t recurred,” said Chia, a crowd favourite in Malaysia.
He is now seeking to become the first local winner of the tournament, scheduled at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
Chia’s best finish came in the 2009 edition when he tied for the 11th place on the leaderboard, following his halfway lead that he lost in the third round.
“I know many people want to see a Malaysian winning the home tournament and I still believe I can do it. Hopefully, it is my time,” he said. “It has always been a matter of consistency. I need to put together four good rounds”.
“It’s important to play well for the first two days but you need to be consistent to give yourself a chance of going after the trophy,” he added.
Meanwhile, another Malaysian emerging star, Shaaban Hussin, is aiming his first victory on the tour at Kuala Lumpur.
Last week, he lost his three-round lead at the ISPS Handa Singapore Classic to take the 13th place after carding a 72 in the final round.
