Danny Chia wishes to be paired with Tiger Woods at the CIMB Classic
Danny Chia of Malaysia expressed his wish to be paired with the 14-time major champion, Tiger Woods, at the CIMB Classic, slated to start from Thursday, October 25, 2012.
The US$6.1 million event is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the PGA Tour, featuring some of the most prominent names from different parts of the world.
The 48-man field of the tournament will feature a total of 30 PGA Tour professionals and 10 Asian Tour players. The other eight players will make it to the elite field through sponsor exemptions.
Talking to the reporters at the Mines Resort and Golf Club, the Malaysian star said that he will try to repeat his heroics of last year, in order to be paired with the legendary Woods on the weekend.
He is currently scheduled to be paired with the American Jeff Overturn for the opening round. Last year, he made a strong start in the event and joined Vijay Singh in the third round.
It was a great pleasure for him to play alongside some of the best players the sport has ever produced. At the end of the event in 2011, he held the 13th position on the leaderboard.
“If I play well enough, it shouldn't be a problem to draw with him (Woods). It would be fantastic. I've played in a lot of events that he's played in as well, but never played good enough to get a pairing with him. So hopefully I get to play with Tiger,”
said Chia.
He also confirmed that he had been practicing hard at the Mines Resort, since he started working with Steven Giuliano, a renowned swing coach.
Giuliano also works for the club’s golf academy. Therefore, he can be of great help to the Malaysian in recording good scores on the leaderboard.
“Yeah, I'm quite happy to be here,” said Chia. “I think it's a golf course that you need to drive the ball really well here. Once you hit good drives, you can shoot very low. You can get a lot of birdies, especially when this year’s conditions are even better
than last year”.
