Danny Cipriani confident of his place with Melbourne Rebels – Rugby news
Melbourne Rebels top scorer in the Super XV so far has expressed his confidence for retaining a place with the Rebels.
Former Wasps Fly Half Danny Cipriani joined the Rebels at the start of Super XV. The 23-year-old is a former English star before the injuries and disciplinary issues shortened his English Career.
Alongside the injuries, Cipriani is renowned for the different disciplinary related issues and many considered it the main reason behind his departure from the English Test Team. Cipriani has signed two-year contract with the Melbourne Rebels with an overall
ambition to make a place in the English team.
Cipriani although has featured in all the games Rebels have played in the Super XV. However, this is he started the season as second choice fly half as James Higendorf took the field as the Rebels played against the Waratahs in their first ever super rugby
match. Higendorf sustained an injury during the sixth minute of the game and left the field.
Cipriani has played in all the eight games of the season so far. Rebels have won three and lost five out of the eight they have played. For Rebels it could have been so easily four wins if Cipriani did not commit errors during the last minute of the games
against the Sharks. Sharks scored to take the game 34-32.
In absence of the Higendorf, Danny Cipriani has regularly featured as the Rebels Fly-Half. Cipriani has so far scored 76 points in the eight matches. He scored 76 points with one try, 10 conversions and 17 penalties.
He was the top scorer for Rebels in their last game against the Highlanders which they lost 40-18. Cipriani scored a conversion and 2 penalties in the match and was the sole scorer for Rebels in the first half.
Cipriani’s place in the Melbourne Rebels comes to the limelight after Rebels have announced the signing of Wallaby and Waratahs Back Kurtley Beale. Rebels are also looking to bring in James O’Connor from the Western Force. These signings did result in speculations
that the Rebels Cipriani is moving back to the Europe.
Different European Clubs have contact some key Super XV players to play in Europe, most notable of all is the Crusaders and All Blacks Dan Carter.
However, Cipriani has categorically turned down any such event and has opted to stay with the Rebels even after the end of the season.
Regarding his experience with the Rebels he said, “I came out here to rediscover my love for the game because I was really close to not playing it for very much longer last year. I'm enjoying my time here, enjoying the season.”
His performance in the season has been impressive and something that would keep him in contention for the place in next year's super rugby competition.
Cipriani will look forward to improve his performance to impress the English Team Coach for a place in the English Test team for the World Cup. But for now he’ll play against the Blues as Rebels move to New Zealand during the Round 10 of the Super XV.
