Danny Duffy shines as Kansas City Royals rout Oakland Athletics 7-4 - MLB Update
Kansas City Royals’ starter, Danny Duffy had a notable day with the ball as he pitched 6 1/3 innings and had four strike-outs with an ERA of 5.64 in the Royals’ 7-4 victory against the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum, Oakland on September 6.
In the first inning, the batters did not score even a single run for their respective teams. Melky Cabrera grounded out to third base while at left-field Alex Gordon flied out and Billy Butler struck-out without posting any run during first inning. Similarly,
Athletics were also immobilised at the bottom of first inning as Hideki Matsui hit a single-run shot towards centre-field but Cliff Pennington popped out to pitcher and Josh Willingham fouled out to first base.
Royals’ batters took their initial runs in the second inning and got a 4-0 lead. Eric Hosmer hit a solo homer (406 feet) to right-field and Jeff Francoeur struck a one-run homer (409 feet) towards left-field. The third run was taken by Johnny Giavotella
when Alcides Escobar reached to third base on an infield single and Yamaico Navarro moved to second base.
Salvador Perez added the fourth run for Royals when Gordon was grounded out to first base and Escobar occupied third base to end the second inning. On the other hand, Athletics also contributed two runs to cut their deficit 4-2, at the bottom of third inning.
Ryan Sweeney posted one run when Jemile Weeks hit a double-run shot to centre-field.
The second run for Athletics was taken by Anthony Recker when Pennington bunted a single-run drive towards left-field and Weeks moved to third base. Pennington occupied second base on the throwing error of the Royals’ fielders. In the fifth inning, Royals
smashed three quick runs to get a 7-2 lead.
Duffy said, “Last time I had about 150 so it was a nice little wind down. It's something to build on for next year.”
Hosmer, Francoeur and Perez each singled to complete a three-run campaign for Royals. During seventh inning, Michael Taylor contributed a single run for Athletics to reduce their lead 7-3 when Weeks reached to third base on an infield single and Sweeney
moved to second base. In the ninth inning, Brandon Allen posted the last run for Athletics to further reduce their lead 7-4.
As a result, Royals confirmed a 2-0 victory in the three-game series played at O.co Coliseum.
