Danny Duffy’s pitching helps Kansas City Royals defeat Cleveland Indians 5-3 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals’ starter, Danny Duffy had a remarkable day with the ball as he pitched five innings and permitted just two runs on eight hits in the Royals’ 5-3 win against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field, Cleveland on July 31.
In the first inning, Miguel Cabrera hit a single-run shot to centre-field while Alex Gordon grounded out to first base and Billy Butler got out at second base without adding any run to the Royals’ score-card. Similarly, the Indians’ batters also looked immobilised
as Asdrubal Cabrera reached towards third base on an infield single but Michael Brantley struck-out looking and Jason Kipnis grounded out to second base.
Royals got off the mark during the second inning when Jeff Francoeur hit a solo homer (390 feet) towards left-field to give his team a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, the pitchers were unable to take any run on the accurate throws of the pitchers. During
the fourth inning, the Royals raised their lead 2-0 when Mike Moustakas doubled towards right-field and Francoeur scored one run on the error of the Indians’ second baseman Kipnis.
At the top of the fifth inning, the Royals put another single run to extend their lead but the Indians also opened their scoring account by taking a couple of runs to reduce their lead 3-2, at the bottom of the fifth inning. Gordon hit a one-run homer (409
feet) to centre-field. On the other side, Kipnis homered (388 feet) towards right-centre while the second run for the Indians was taken by Asdrubal Cabrera when Carlos Santana tripled off deep right-field.
During the sixth and seventh inning of the game, the pitchers got things under control through their impressive pitching. Duffy gave up just two earned runs and three walks with an ERA of 5.05. He was able to strike-out six Indians batters on his 89 pitches.
In the eighth inning, both the teams added one individual run to their score-cards and moved it 4-3. Gordon posted a single run on the sacrifice fly of Butler towards right-field. Ezequiel Carrera scored the last run for the Indians when Travis Hafner was
grounded out to short-stop position.
Royals got a 5-3 lead in the ninth inning when Alcides Escobar hit a single-run shot to centre-field and Chris Getz added the final run. As a result, the Royals clinched the three-game series 2-1 after a decent win.
