Danny Espinosa shines as Washington Nationals defeat St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 – MLB Update
Washington Nationals’ second baseman, Danny Espinosa had a remarkable day as he went 3-for-5 and hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning to give the Nationals a 7-4 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals at Nationals Park, Washington on June
16.
The Nationals swept the Cardinals 3-0 in a three-game series at Washington.
In the first inning, the Nationals opened their scoring account by posting two runs and took an initial 2-0 lead. At the top of the first, Tyler Greene was out at left-field and Colby Rasmus grounded out to first base. On the other side, Jayson Werth hit
a one-run homer (426 feet) towards centre-field while Roger Bernadina homered (418 feet) to left-field at the bottom of the first inning.
The Cardinals got off the mark in the second inning and reduced the lead 2-1 when Matt Holliday struck a solo homer (437 feet) to left-field. The batters were unable to score even a single run during the third inning due to impressive throws of the pitchers.
Both teams added one run to their score-cards in the fourth inning. Yadier Molina was ground out to second base and Albert Pujols posted one run for the Cardinals while Michael Morse scored a single run as Espinosa singled to right-field. The Nationals were
leading 3-2 at the end of fourth inning.
In the fifth inning, the pitchers controlled the scoring shots of the batters. John Lannan was economical as he pitched seven innings with an ERA of 3.52 and gave two runs on six hits including two earned runs. He struck-out two batters and allowed two walks
on his 86 pitches.
The Nationals extended their lead 4-2 in the sixth inning when Laynce Nix struck a one-run homer (387 feet) towards right-field. Seventh inning passed score-less but the Cardinals scored one run in the eighth to reduce their lead 4-3 as Pujols homered (387
feet) to left-field.
The game was tied 4-4 in the ninth inning when Molina hit a solo homer to left centre-field. An additional 10th inning was given to break the dead-lock and the Nationals’ batters got full benefit from it as they blasted three runs. Ryan Zimmerman
and Morse both contributed two runs while Espinosa homered (381 feet) towards right-field to complete a three-run campaign.
