Danny Garcia: I hit him with a perfect left hook and it landed – Boxing News
Danny Garcia, the current WBC and WBA light welterweight titlist, was able to retain his crown by defeating Mexican Erik Morales in the fourth round at the new Barclays Centre in Brooklyn. Garcia was able to rectify the mistakes he made during his last encounter
against Morales, when the American unbeaten won via unanimous decision.
“I noticed when I was backing him up with the jabs a little bit and when I was in the pocket hit with a hook one time,” said the unified champion who was proud of his victory against the Mexican legend. “My dad was like, ‘You slapped him with a hook.’ So
the second time I was backing him up. He was trying to take me to the body so I just stood in the pocket. I just turned my whole body. I hit him with a perfect left hook and it landed.”
It should be noted here that even this time Garcia’s performance was not at par, as only 26 percent of his total 220 punches connected. However, the American unbeaten was surely dominant when it came to power punching. Approximately 47 of his total 91 punches
connected. Moreover, out of the final 13 punches thrown, 9 connected.
Garcia spoke about the previous fight, saying he was too respectful toward Morales which was the main reason as to why he was unable to score a knockout.
“I showed him too much respect in the first fight. You see the first fight, I thought this fight would be more of a war. I never duck anybody. I fought Khan and no one gave me a chance. Keep lining them up and I’ll knock them down,” said Garcia.
Garcia now stands with 25 wins and 0 losses, whereas Morales has gone to 9 losses and 52 wins. Morales had already failed two drug tests this month but he still fought. It was Garcia who was brave enough to go head to head against Morales, despite the fact
that the latter failed two drug tests.
For now, Garcia is the better man between the two. Morales is considering retirement in order to escape such defeats in the future.
