Danny Garcia likely to wrest junior welterweight title from Eric Morales
Eric Morales became the first Mexican-born boxer who has world titles of four different categories to his name. Being the reigning champion of the junior welterweight title, he is least likely to retain the same next year. The fact of the matter is that Danny Garcia can easily snatch the title from his jaws for a couple of reasons.
First and the foremost reason, he has recently undergone a gallbladder surgery, making the bout doubtful, slated to be held on 28 January, 2012.
"I spoke to (Morales). He asked us to please wait (until) Friday,” Gomez, his promoter and match maker of Golden Boy, told while speaking to media.
Morales has bagged 52 victories, 7 defeats, and 36 knock-outs. Not a bad record at all. Garcia has 22 wins, no loss, and 14 knock-outs which is equally a commendable career. Garcia can finish him off in the January bout because he is still 23 years old, while Morales, 35, now has turned into an aging boxer.
Garcia finished the 2010 year with a best career victory over the former titleholder, Kendall Holt, on October 15. Plus, he will be fighting in the ring, brimming with home supporters, at Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas. He is currently ranked second.
Morales has ended this year’s engagements on a good note as he claimed the WBC(World Boxing Council) light welterweight title against Pablo Cesar Cano but is marred by his tendency to sustain injuries.
Boxing, by nature, is a very competitive sport, which requires the fitness of an athlete and the strength of the strongest man. Age plays a pivotal role in winning or losing. With age, the boxer begins to lose his luster, strength and stamina. He becomes extremely vulnerable to injuries. The opponents can easily exploit this downside of an aging boxer.
That is the case with Morales. Even if he recovers from the recent surgery and shows up in the ring, he will probably not be able to make a strong statement. Moreover, he has an ability to land some hard punches on his opponents but he is a strong, yet comparatively slow fighting machine. He is not as agile as Garcia is.
Morales is on the verge of retiring from the ring for good but he is still willing to bag some more victories. In other words, he is not among the likes of ageless Bernard Hopkins. He is not as fresh and receptive as Hopkins is.
His opponent, Garcia, can pose an immense danger to him in the upcoming bout. He is tall, agile, and has an ability to land strong punches effectively. Above all, the age factor will certainly favour Garcia as he is only 23. He also has a tendency to make some big and effective shots. Hence, his whopping knock-out winning percentage is no surprise.
“To be able to face legend like Erik Morales and headline an HBO fight card is what I have been waiting for my whole life,” said Garcia. “I am going to work hard and make a statement on national television that I have what it takes to not only face one of the greats, but to beat him too.”
Garcia seems to have a pre-match advantage over Morales, whose presence for the bout still hinges in the balance due to surgery.
