Danny Garcia talks about Amir Khan’s speed – Boxing News
WBC and WBA unified light welterweight titlist Danny Garcia admitted the fact that Briton fighter Amir Khan was too speedy for him to handle. According to Garcia, when he faced Khan on July 14 this year, he was surprised to see how fast he was. Garcia won
via fourth round knockout to win Khan’s WBA title.
“I finished him in four rounds and learnt a lot from that fight and have since become a better fighter,” said Garcia, who almost destroyed Khan. “I grew up in that fight because Amir is definitely up there. He is world class. I knew Amir was going to be
fast but I thought, 'How fast can he be? He is only a human being after all.' But boy was he fast. I was thinking, 'Who else was in the ring hitting me!”
Garcia had knocked out Khan with a huge left hook in the third round of their showdown. The Brit made it back to his feet but he never could control the fight from there on. Garcia knocked out Khan twice in the fourth round until the referee stopped the
show.
“I had to adapt quickly, because I am not the fastest starter in the world, but, as soon as I started landing punches, I knew I could beat him,” said Garcia, who was quite slow in the first two rounds against Khan.
Khan was winning on all scorecards but later Garcia revealed it was his strategy to start slow in order to understand the Briton. Garcia did well and finally knocked out the ‘overrated fighter’, as his father said it.
In the aftermath, we saw Khan parting ways with Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach. According to Khan, Roach was unable to work on his defence, as he is mainly an offence coach.
However, Garcia believes it was not Khan’s defence that was weak but it was him being ‘reckless’ that caused him the downfall. According to Garcia, the reason why Khan gets caught up is his recklessness, as he allows others to hit by putting his guard down
while attacking during fights.
