Danny Garcia to Amir Khan: I am a great counter puncher – Boxing News
WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia is of the view that it is the perfect time for him to clash with former IBF and WBA light welterweight titlist Amir Khan. Garcia is confident that he will be the one to unify the titles and not Khan.
In his recent interview, Garcia came up saying, “I believe that everything happens for a reason. I think it's the perfect time for this fight. I'm the champion and he calls himself the best. If he calls himself the best then he has to beat the champion.
To me, it's just another guy in my way trying to defeat me, but it ain't gonna happen.”
He added, “Everybody says he's fast and all that, but he reaches a lot with his punches and I think that's where he goes wrong.”
Garcia is an unbeaten American fighter, just two weeks away from his showdown against Khan. It should be noted here that this would be Garcia’s biggest payday to date. Garcia further said that he is a great counter puncher and that is where Khan will lag.
According to Garcia, if Khan tries to come in he will pay for it.
Lastly, Garcia said that he will adapt to whatever Khan offers in the ring and will play accordingly.
Amir Khan and Danny Garcia will go head to head on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The bout, which was initially for Garcia’s WBC light welterweight title, is now a title unification bout with the WBA light welterweight title on the line as well.
The WBA stripped Peterson off the title last week following his failed drug test that was conducted in April. However, Peterson retains the IBF light welterweight title, as the commission still has to make a ruling over it.
For now, this is Khan’s chance to unify the titles again by defeating Garcia. If he beats Garcia, he will win Garcia’s WBC title as well as the vacant WBA light welterweight.
