Danny Green involved in new boxing controversy
IBO cruiserweight king Danny Green (31-3, 27 KOs) has landed smack in the middle of another boxing controversy following his title fight with BJ Flores (24-1, 15 KOs).
A recent Youtube video from the fight has emerged capturing Green drink a yellow substance between rounds, sparking immediate rumours that he was consuming a banned or illegal substance.
During professional fights, boxers are prohibited from consuming anything but water, which includes energy beverages and supplements.
The development mirrors another incident recently contested.
Minutes before the Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao fight on November 13, Margarito was filmed pouring an unknown powder into a beverage in his locker room.
Pacquiao’s team immediately jumped on the incident and informed relevant authority bodies, who then prohibited Margarito from taking the drink.
Green, too, has become notorious for his involvement in a July contest with opponent Paul Briggs. The bout, which took place in Perth, Australia, lasted just 29 seconds after Briggs was knocked out by a harmless jab that grazed the top of his head.
Immediately after the fight Green called Briggs a “dog” and claimed he shouldn’t be entitled to his earnings. He later retracted the statements and claimed that he felt Briggs was telling the truth in being legitimately hurt by the punch.
More conspicuous still was the fact that hours before the fight various online bookmakers received steep betting plunges in favour of Green winning the fight by way of knock-out in the first round.
Online outlet Centrebet labelled the plunges “highly, highly dubious,” with spokesperson Neil Evans announcing: "We've never ever in the history of boxing seen so much money go on a specific decision outcome, as in a first- or second-round knock-out. There
was a massive go on first or second-round knock-out starting from very early yesterday morning, right through the day, certainly up until early afternoon.”
It is unclear if the video will spark an investigation into the matter.
