Danny Green willing to do anything for the success of the team – NBA News
Danny Green is a team man, and has no issues with Coach Gregg Popovich benching him for game 5 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Talking to reporters in the locker room after the game 5 loss, Green said that it did not matter to him what position he played in and how much playing time he got as long as he was able to contribute to the success of the team.
“I tried to take it in stride. Naturally, we are all humans. It’s something you are going to think about. We haven’t changed the lineup in a while, so my rhythm was a little off. But it’s not about that right now. This is bigger
than me. This is bigger than all of us individually. It’s us as a whole. I tried to tell the other guys what I saw and to cheer on my teammates as best as I could,” said Green after the game.
Danny Green had become a regular starter for the San Antonio Spurs and seemed quite comfortable with the role given to him in the team. He was also enjoying his role, knocking down open shots and helping the Spurs spread the defense
of the opponents with good jump shooting. However, Green was benched by Popovich for game 5 and Manu Ginobili was started in his place. Ginobili went on to score 34 points in the game, but his effort was not enough to secure a victory for the Spurs.
Green is 8 of 28 from the field against the Thunder in the series, and went 0 of 2 in the four minutes he played in game 5. He has been on a shooting slump all season, but could not give any explanation for it when asked by the
media crew.
"No, I can’t. Honestly, I can’t. Everybody — even the best — have slumps. Ray Allen, one of the best shooters to ever play the game, has had some rough times. You just have to stay confident,” said Green.
Green said that Popovich told him that he was not going to start game 5 before Monday’s shoot around but added that he was fine with it as it was not about him at this moment.
The Spurs are down 2-3 in the Western Conference Finals after winning the first two games against the Thunder. The road victory for the Thunder puts the momentum on their side as they host the Spurs for game 6 at the Chesapeake
Energy Arena, where they are 7-0 so far this postseason. They will have an opportunity to finish off the series in front of their home crowd on Wednesday night and pull off an upset, while securing a berth in the NBA Finals.
