Danny Murphy believes managers play a role in bad tackles
Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy has suggested that managers need to take more responsibility for their players actions.
The 33-year-old was speaking following a number of incidents in which players have been seriously injured in bad challenges.
The most high profile incident was Manchester City’s Nigel de Jong’s tackle on Hatem Ben Arfa, which left the Newcastle winger with a broken leg in last Saturday’s Premier League match.
"They can say it's effective and they have got to win games, but the fact is the managers are sending out their players so pumped up there are inevitably going to be problems. Your manager dictates what
your players do and how you behave,” the former England international said.
The Fulham captain also criticised a number of clubs for their approach, which Murphy believes has led to the number of injuries.
“You get managers who are sending their teams out to stop other teams playing, which is happening more and more; the Stokes, Blackburns and Wolves."
"The pace in which some players go into tackles now is ridiculous. There's no brains involved in the players who are doing that,” Murphy added.
Murphy did concede that no player deliberately went out to badly injure another, but urged all players to consider their actions.
"I don't believe players are going out to break another player's leg, but there has to be some logic and intelligence involved. If you are going at someone at a certain pace and you don't get it right
you are going to hurt them,” said Murphy
Fulham’s Bobby Zamora and Murphy’s team-mate has also suffered a broken leg after a challenge by Wolves Karl Henry. The Wolves defender was in trouble again in the Premier League match with Wigan after
he fouled Jordi Gomez.
Murphy believes that players should be punished if they reoffend and said, "Players should be culpable for that, in terms of punishment I don't know what, but they need to show a little bit more intelligence,
especially the ones who are doing it repeatedly."
His words also suggest he's looking to put responsiblity on coaches.
