Danny Welbeck joins Sunderland on loan and another striker may follow
Manchester United youngster Danny Welbeck has joined English Premier League outfit Sunderland on a season-long loan, it was announced today.
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, himself a former United player, revealed his delight at securing the 19-year-old player’s services for the new campaign. He said that: "He's a young man but he'll fit into our squad fantastically well."
Welbeck told of his delight at making the move to the North East and will be in contention to play in the EPL season opener against Birmingham City. He told Sunderland’s official website that: "I'm delighted to be able to come to Sunderland - I've come here to get some experience and I'm looking forward to it."
'Hungry and determined'
The striker faces competition for a place in the starting line-up in the form of Darren Bent, Fraizer Campbell and Martyn Waghorn but said that he was up for the challenge. He revealed that: “I'm hungry and determined to make an impression here.”
Welbeck will bolster Steve Bruce’s options in front of goal after the £8m departure of Kenwyne Jones to Stoke City. However, Bruce said that he is not a direct replacement for Jones and the club may look to use the fee they received for the Trinidad and Tobago international. He told reporters that: "It would be unfair to say that he (Welbeck) is the replacement for Kenwyne. There's still a couple of weeks to go in the (transfer) market and hopefully the money is there to go and spend it."
Bruce revealed that he is interested in Manchester City forward Craig Bellamy, who was left out of the squad for a UEFA Europa League tie despite spots for two more players being available and looks to be out of favour at the club. Bruce said that: "There's a lot of clubs who would love Craig Bellamy. He's an individual and he's a fantastic player but whether it's possible, I'm not quite sure. I've been a big admirer of Craig's for a long, long time. If he's available, which it looks like he is, and if we could afford him, then I would love to bring Craig to the football club."
