Danny Welbeck signs for Sunderland on loan
Danny Welbeck, the young Manchester United Striker has signed for Sunderland on loan for the upcoming season. The 19 year old front man has not had too much first team action for Manchester United since making his debut in September 2008. He was part of United’s first team in the Carling cup final back in 2009.
Sunderland Manager Steve Bruce said that, he is very pleased to have a player of his quality at the club. He added that he is a player with immense potential and has the ability to score goals which will be great for the club in the new season.
Welbeck made his first Champions League appearance for Manchester United against the Turkish club Besiktas, later he was sent on a 6 month loan to Preston.
He started well for the championship club, but after scoring just 2 goals he was hampered by a knee injury and had to sit out the rest of the season.
Steve Bruce said that the timing of his arrival could not have been better; the manager said that after the departure of the Trinidad striker Kenvin Jones, Sunderland needed someone to fill in the void. He added that it will not be fair on the young-man to expect him to take on the role of club’s main striker and score loads of goals. However he said that he knows he will be able to make good use of the young English striker. Bruce, who has played under Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, at Old Trafford, said that Welbeck has had the best man to groom him at Manchester United and he knows that he already has matured into a quality striker. The Sunderland manager said that Ferguson before agreeing on the loan deal had told him all about the potential of the player, and he is sure that he will not be disappointed. Bruce said that the money that the club got from the sale of Jones is still there and before the end of the transfer window, he may go out and buy one more striker to give cover to Welback.
Steve Bruce said that he knows Ferguson very well, and knows that Welbeck has some rare talent, and that is the reason Fergie was not been willing to sell him till now. He said that all Ferguson wants is to get the young man enough first team experience so that he can blend him into United’s first team by next season.
Bruce also said that he has his eye on the Wales striker, Craig Bellamy. He said that he has been unsettled at Manchester City and has been looking for a move for a while. The Black Cats’ manager said that Bellamy has pace and finesse and all he needs is a team and a manager who can understand him.
Bruce said that it is not just him, but several other clubs and some real big names who are considering moving in for Bellamy. He added that he has been an admirer of the troublesome front man for a while, and if he can get a good deal he will love to have him at the stadium of light.
On the other hand, Steve Bruce also named the new club captain; Bruce said that midfielder Lee Cattermole will be leading the club in the new season. Former Sunderland captain Lorik Cana parted ways with the club earlier in the summer.
