Danny Willett’s first win on the European Tour
Daniel John Willett won his first Trophy on the European Tour by winning the International Open. This was Willet’s 106th appearance in the European Tour event.
Before this win, Willett have had 19 top-ten finishes in the European tournaments and his best performance was when he finished second in 2010.
This win could move him to the top 110 players. Previously Willet was on the 204th
position in the Official World Golf Rankings.
The event took place at Cologne. In the event, Danny Willet claimed his first title by beating the Australian Professional golfer, Marcus Fraser.
Both the players displayed a very impressive performance. The Englishman had a lead of three shots in the beginning, but Fraser carded 3 bogeys, which levelled the two.
Danny Willett and Marcus Fraser, in the end, finished at 11-under par. As the two were tied in the end, the players had to play the 18th hole until there was a winner.
As a result, the 18th hole was played 4 more times. The match went on till Willet won the match and this was his first professional win.
After the match, Willet thanked all the people who had supported him and his fans who had been patient with him.
In an interview, the Englishman said, “It’s amazing, it was a tough day - it was brutal with the wind whipping and it was raining”.
“Marcus had a great round today and I hung in there nicely. Hopefully I gave people a good show,” he added.
In the end, Willett said that he would keep working hard and was hopeful that he would win the cup next time as well.
In the tournament, Paul Mcginley of Ireland, Gonzalo Fdez-Castano of Spain and Chris Wood finished at tied third with a 10-under par
Meanwhile, Henrik Stenson of Sweden and Marcel Siem of Germany finished at tied 6th with a 9-under par.
As Danny Willett’s age is just 24 at the time, he became the 2nd youngest winner of the BMW International Open. Before him, it was Martin Kaymer, who won the International Open at the age of 23.
